“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.” ― Lao Tzu
I am fascinated with the question of what becomes of vessels (shells, bottles, jars, and more) when they no longer serve their original purpose. Do they become things of beauty? Are they simply broken and discarded? Painting these two tiny shells on an oversized canvas made me think more about their second life, once a home for sea creatures now, an architectural form for humans to contemplate.
This work was on view at the Southern Vermont Art Center in 2016.
